About Me

Picture
My name is Tabitha Hernandez. I am a mom, daughter, grandma, and friend to everyone who comes my way. I wanted to be so many things in my life from a secretary to studying journalism and becoming the next anchor on channel 45 Telemundo. I wanted to become a police officer and nurse but all that changed when I became a young momma at the age of fifteen-year-old. The last grade I completed was the eighth grade and had to grow up fast, get a job, and then get my license. Having my daughter changed everything for me and wanting to become a role model for her. Having little help, I did manage to work two jobs and then she got older I was able to quit one job and go to school to get my GED. That was hard for me due to only the eighth grade being my last grade completed and not hitting the math like I needed. Then life took over and got married and had two more kids, so all together I had three daughters by the age of twenty-one.
My next chapter in life was becoming a certified medical assistant and working in the medical field for 22 years and enrolled at ACC to do my pre-requisition to apply for the nursing program. Working in the medical field I got burned out and then changed my major to law enforcement but got told I was too old and that I could study to become a peace officer. After that, I decided to change my major to General studies. My mom got terminally ill and I was at ACC for 7 years and just wanted to get school done. Then I quit my job to become my mom's full-time provider. Being her voice and advocate was the hardest role I had to deal with. She became bed-bound and transportation was difficult to take her to her doctors' appointments.  Her last months were very heartbreaking. Being put in a hospice facility and then passing away was the hardest time in my life. She was my routine for fifteen years and finding what I wanted to do next in life was not so simple.
I love helping and caring for people and I wanted to make a change in the world. My cousin Stephaine had told me to apply for a substitute position and see if I liked it. I worked for a few months and then got asked if I would have the position to be the long-term substitute position for the art teacher for a junior high. I prayed for change and God decided to put this challenge in front of me. I gave in and decided to give it a try. I gave it my all and conquered.  I asked myself if this was what I wanted to do for the first time in my life. I enjoyed it so much that I enrolled myself for the next semester at the University of Houston-Clear Lake and continued to substitute for the district. 3 years later I'm almost done with my degree in teaching Social Studies for 4th -8th grade and a certification in special education.  Working with the kids has saved me from a lost path after my mom passed. I have the drive and passion to change many people's lives and teach history. Making it fun so they will stay interested and continue to learn.  We all had that one teacher who made an impact on our lives and mine was Coach Killen. He taught me things about history that have been embedded into my mind and thanked him for making it fun and exciting to learn. I will graduate in late 2025 with my Bachelor’s in social studies and certification in special education.
