Reflective Essay

Throughout this semester, my writing process has undergone significant development, revealing several important insights into my ethos, skills, and growth as a writer. By engaging deeply with the writing assignments, I discovered the value of extensive planning, structured time management, and the strategic use of logos, ethos, and pathos. These elements not only improved the flow and quality of my writing but also fostered a more disciplined and systematic approach to my work.
One of the most interesting things I learned about myself as a writer is the importance of meticulous planning and outlining. In my first major text, I struggled with organizing my thoughts and maintaining focus. This challenge led me to adopt a more detailed outlining process, which significantly improved the coherence of my subsequent essays. For example, in my second major text, I created a comprehensive outline to structure my arguments more effectively, leading to a clearer and more persuasive final piece.


Scheduling separate blocks of time for writing and editing was another crucial lesson. In the past, my tendency to write and edit simultaneously often resulted in fragmented and inefficient work. By allocating specific times for writing and editing, I managed to avoid last-minute scrambles and produce higher-quality drafts. This approach was particularly beneficial in my third major text, where I dedicated distinct sessions to developing my ideas and refining my arguments. The feedback I received highlighted the improved clarity and logical flow of my writing, validating this time management strategy.
The most challenging aspect of my writing assignments was effectively incorporating logos, ethos, and pathos. Balancing rational arguments, ethical appeals, and emotional connections required careful consideration and a nuanced approach. In my second major text, I focused on crafting logical arguments supported by ethical concerns but struggled to integrate emotional appeals. Recognizing this weakness, I sought feedback and examples of successful writing that effectively balanced these elements. Through iterative revisions and practice, I improved my ability to create persuasive and engaging narratives, as evidenced by the positive feedback on my third major text.


To address the challenge of integrating logos, ethos, and pathos, I propose a revolutionary new approach: "The Triple Threat Writing Routine." This involves donning three different hats for each element of persuasion. For logos, I'll wear my Sherlock Holmes hat, complete with a magnifying glass, to remind myself to look closely at the logic and evidence. For ethos, I'll sport a judge's wig, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations and credibility. And for pathos, I'll put on a dramatic actor's beret, channeling my inner Shakespeare to bring out the emotional appeal.
By physically embodying each element of persuasion, I can ensure that I give due attention to all aspects of my writing. Plus, it’s hard to take myself too seriously when I’m switching hats mid-sentence, which adds a delightful dose of humor to the writing process.


In conclusion, this writing assignment has been a transformative experience, revealing key insights into my writing process and highlighting areas for improvement. Through detailed planning, structured time management, and a balanced use of persuasive elements, I have enhanced the quality and effectiveness of my writing. By reflecting on these lessons and applying them to future work, I am confident in my continued growth as a writer. The feedback and experiences from this semester have not only improved my writing skills but also deepened my understanding of the writing process and its potential to influence and inspire others.
And remember, if you see me in a beret, don’t be alarmed – I’m just perfecting my pathos.
